The U.S. Department of Transportation announced today that legislation recently approved by Congress will allow 149 low-activity control towers nationwide to remain open. The list included the towers in Tupelo, Tuscaloosa and Greenville, Miss. Golden Triangle already had been exempted because of its use by Columbus Air Force Base. The closures originally had been ordered as part of federal spending cuts. The closures were scheduled for next month.
