Tupelo Water, Light Dept. Warn of Utility Scam

TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — The Tupelo Water and Light Department (TWLD) is warning residents of a utility scam which has recently resurfaced.

According to a statement provided by TWLD Office Manager Lynn Fair, the alleged scam artists are contacting local businesses, claiming “their account will be disconnected for a past due bill.”

The individuals, per the statement, are requesting local businesses supply their credit card information over the phone to absolve the alleged debt.

As part of the scam, businesses are also reportedly provided two numbers to contact in order to make a payment: 1-800-680-4164 or 601-272-2383.
