TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)- A 31-year-old woman is in jail after police say she tried to sell her 18-month-old child.

Kathryn Herring made her initial appearance in Lee County Justice Court.

Police say they have been investigating Herring since February, when the Lee County Sheriff’s department began getting calls, saying a woman was approaching people, offering them a baby for sale.

Since then, DHS put the 18-month-old in foster care, and police say Herring offered her child for sale numerous times. Lieutenant Lynette Sandlin says the case is unusual and sad.

“I’ve been here 16 years today and I have never seen this situation,” Sandlin said. “I think at some point she was in need of money and just that was an out for her.”

If convicted on the felony charge she faces up to $20,000 in fines and 10 years in prison.

Her bond was set at $25,000.
