TISHOMINGO COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — State officials are investigating a boating accident that killed two men in Tishomingo County early Saturday morning.

Coroner Mack Wilemon tells WCBI it happened shortly after midnight on the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway, north of Iuka.

Witnesses say a bass boat was heading north on the water at a high rate of speed, when it hit a barge.

Fishermen Jeremie Floyd, 40, and Carey Downs, 39, were on board, and died.

Wilemon says divers with Tishomingo County and Hardin County, Tennessee found the victims’ bodies later on Saturday morning.

He says Floyd died from drowning, and Downs died from trauma to the head.

They both lived in Counce, Tennessee.

Wilemon says the Mississippi Department of Wildlife, Fisheries, and Parks is investigating.
