WEST POINT, Miss. – (WCBI) Like father, like daughter. Angela Turner Lairy hopes to fill the state senate seat vacated last month by her father’s death.

Lairy qualified for the January 15th special election that will determine who will serve the remainder of the late Bennie Turner’s seat. Like her father, Lairy is an attorney and the city and county prosecutor in West Point and Clay County.

If elected, says she wants to take a bi-partisan approach to benefit the residents of her district.

” What I would do, working with Republicans and Democrats is to approach any conversation with an open mind. Knowing that no one person or small group of people have all of the answers ,” says Turner-Lairy.

The district covers all or parts of Clay, Lowndes, Oktibbeha and Noxubee counties.

Turner-Lairy will have some competition in January.

Kenny Fowler, also a West Point native, qualified to run at the Clay County Courthouse Monday. He is the former owner of Fowler’s One Stop in West Point.

Monday was the deadline to qualify.
