Two Starkville Seniors Named Presidential Scholars Candidates

STARKVILLE, Miss. (PRESS RELEASE) — SHS seniors Tanzim Hassan and Jacob Easley have qualified as candidates for the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program.

Both were selected for their exceptional academic performance, along with superior achievements as scholars and artists, leadership qualities, strong character and involvement in community and school activities.

The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 52nd year, recognizes the most distinguished graduating seniors in the nation. Each year, up to 161 students are chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars. This prestigious recognition is considered one of nation’s highest honors bestowed upon high school seniors.

Tanzim and Jacob scored a 35 on the ACT, and they are on track to graduate from SHS with highest honors in May.

Tanzim was named a National Merit Semifinalist in the fall, scoring a 2390 out of 2400 on the SAT, including perfect marks in math and reading.

Jacob has earned recognition as one of the best trombone players in Mississippi. He’s been selected to perform with the internationally recognized Mississippi Lion’s Band four years in a row.

Tanzim and Jacob will now begin the process of submitting materials to be eligible for selection as one of about 800 semifinalists and ultimately a scholar.

Scholars are invited to Washington, D.C. in June to participate in the National Recognition Program, which includes the presentation of the Presidential Scholars Medallion during a White House-sponsored ceremony.
