Utility Crews Making Progress On Outages In The Golden Triangle

Columbus, Mississippi (WCBI) – Utility crews are making progress restoring power throughout the area after Monday afternoon storms rolled through north Mississippi and west Alabama. The Golden Triangle area was particularly hard hit.

4-County Power Electric Association had a little more than 2,000 customers without power about 9:30 P.M. At the height of the outages, more than 4,000 were without electricity.

The utility reported on social media that at least ten poles were broken and crews would work through the night.

Most of 4-County’s outages are in southeastern Noxubee County. More than 700 customers were without power there, according to the cooperative’s website.

Columbus Light and Water reported sporadic single outages about 9:30 P.M. Monday night. Crews were still working in the north and eastern portions of town. Manager Todd Gale says the utility’s larger lines have been repaired.

Gale says the same areas that were hit on April 28th were hit again Monday.

Traffic signals along Highway 45 from Leigh Mall all the way up to 31st Avenue and Holly Hills will most likely be out until Tuesday.

Lowndes County EMA Director Cindy Lawrence says 25-30 trees were reported down across the county. Several trees fell on homes. A vehicle also hit a downed tree sometime after 5 P.M. Monday, and a camper overturned on Oswalt Road.  Lawrence says no injuries were reported.

Starkville also saw significant damage from the line of storms.

Fallen trees and even a shopping center sign toppled over from estimated 70 mile-per-hour winds.

Much of the Highway 12 area, to downtown was without electricity.

Starkville Electric reported major damage to most of its transmission circuits. The utility expected to have most power restored Monday night.

The Oktibbeha County Emergency Management Agency said two homes and two businesses were damaged.
