Vardaman Sweet Potato Farmer to Seek Extension for Trademark Efforts

VARDAMAN, Miss. (WCBI) — Vardaman aldermen once again hesitate to get involved with efforts to trademark the area’s popular sweet potatoes.

Penick Produce Manager Rob Langston has been working on the idea for more than a year, but only came to Vardaman officials about backing the proposal a couple of months ago.

Since then, aldermen have raised questions about support from other growers and how complicated trademark laws would work. With many of those questions still unclear this week, aldermen told Langston they wanted more time.

He is facing a deadline from the U.S. Department of Agriculture this week, but says he’ll seek an extension.
