Vernon, Ala. Woman Earns Top GPA Honor at MUW

COLUMBUS, Miss. — Kelsey Boman of Vernon, Ala., was awarded the Harvey M. Craft Award at Mississippi University for Women.

The award is presented to the graduates with the highest grade point average. For her achievement, the MUW Foundation presented a watch to Bowman.

Finishing with a 4.0, Bowman earned a degree in speech-language pathology. She was involved in Chi Alpha, the Phi Theta Kappa Alumni Association, Mortar Board Honor Society, Phi Kappa Phi Honor Society, National Student Speech Language Hearing Association and the La Sociedad Nacional Honoraria Hispánica. During her time at The W, she also served as orientation leader and interned in the W Leadership Program.

She is the daughter of Bill and Renee Boman of Vernon.

The W’s 130th Commencement took place in Rent Auditorium, Whitfield Hall, on Saturday, May 9. The message was delivered by alumna Dr. Doris Taylor, a pioneer in cardiovascular cell therapy research, and director of regenerative medicine research at the Texas Heart Institute in Houston. Dr. Taylor also serves as director of the Center for Cell and Organ Biotechnology at the Texas Heart Institute and Texas A&M College of Veterinary Medicine and Biomedical Sciences.

In her message to the graduates, Taylor encouraged them to trust their crazy ideas. She compared science to life in that there is a lot of research involved. “Life is a game of persistence. Just when you don’t think it will work—something phenomenal happens,” she said.
