Verona Officer Fatally Wounds Aberdeen Man

Reported by: Allie Martin

VERONA. Miss. – (WCBI) One man is dead , another in custody after a traffic stop turns deadly Tuesday afternoon in Verona.

It was around 1 p.m. when Verona Police stopped a car near the city park.  Witnesses, who declined to go on camera, said two men were inside.

As soon as the car pulled off of Mattox Rd, into a driveway, some sort of confrontation took place. One suspect,31-year old Henry Mongtomery of Aberdeen was shot by police on park property. A second suspect was arrested.

Lee county Sheriff Jim Johnnson is investigating the shooting and says more details will be released later. In the meantime he says the incident proves there’s no such thing as a routine traffic stop.

“As I told you before in 1989 when I worked in Verona, the police chief was killed basically on a routine traffic stop and you never know about these situations, and unless you are there and encountering what is going on , it’s hard to judge how people react, cause these officers and everyone else involved in law enforcement has a split second to determine what use of force they’re going to use,” says Johnson

Identities of the suspect and the officer involved aren’t being released at this time.
