LOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — Two marble plaques honoring Lowndes County’s veterans killed in World War 1 soon will have a prominent new home.

For more than 80 years they guarded the veterans archway entrance to the historic Magnolia Bowl in Columbus. The plaques had been placed there in 1933 by the Daughters of the American Revolution and the American Legion Auxiliary. The other plaques recognized those responsible for building the facility and the fact it was a federal works project during the depths of the Depression.

The DAR rescued them last year when the school board voted to tear down the press box and south wall as part of turning the Bowl into an outdoor classroom.

Today, Lowndes supervisors agreed to work with the D-A-R to install them at the county courthouse.
