COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — After the former Kerr McGee plant closed down and left behind a mess, Columbus residents are making the most out of the situation.

Some of them who live near the Chemical Superfund Site graduated from the Superfund Job Training Initiative, Thursday night.

The program helps participants prepare for environmental jobs.

Some graduates tell WCBI they plan to help clean up the Kerr McGee site or further their training somewhere else.

“My future goal is to keep going higher, and to instill in my children and family to go for the best,” said graduate Deborah Donald. “It’s out there. There’s a lot of opportunities out there.”

16 people graduated from the program.
