NORTHEAST, Miss.  (WCBI)-Lawmakers head back to Jackson tomorrow to begin the 2013 legislative session.

There are several items on the agenda this year, but the main focus is education.

Republican lawmakers will try again to pass a Charter Schools bill.

Last year, House and Senate Republicans tried to pass legislation, but it eventually died.

Governor Phil Byrant and Lt. Governor Tate Reeves are strong supporters of charter schools.  However, opponents believe developing Charter Schools will strip funds away from Public School Districts.

Governor Phil Bryant hopes legislators will start work quickly on education issues.

“We’ve got about a 10-point plan that if the Legislature will work with us, will totally revolutionize the way we go about educating children in Mississippi. It’s been done in Florida, Indiana, and North Carolina and it can be done here,” says Governor Bryant.

Another focus, especially for democrats, is the proposal to expand Medicaid coverage.

Supporters are hoping to expand coverage under the Federal Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, but with Republicans controlling both chambers, it may be tough to get that legislation through.

The legislative session begins at noon.
