OKTIBBEHA COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — An Oktibbeha County couple is celebrating 65 years of wedding bliss.

In Clayton Village an Oktibbeha County woman on the week of her 65th wedding anniversary reflects on where she first met her beau. A then young Lewis Roberson was playing the piano in church. Six and a half decades ago in 1949 Roberson and his 19 year old Brooksville bride got hitched at an old fashion house wedding.

“And we had to hitch a ride you know. Had to have a man to take us over there in a pickup truck over to her house. And I was running late and her mother was getting worried,” said Lewis Roberson/Clayton Village.

Times were simple then for Alberta and Lewis Roberson, parents of seven children. Six girls and one boy, who kept looking desperately for the brother that never came. The secret of their longevity these six and a half decades later…

“It was the Lord, love, patience, forgiving one another,” said Alberta Roberson/1949 Bride.

“No we didn’t agree on everything but we always work together,” said Lewis Roberson.

The two love birds were not rich with wealth, the groom content as long as his bride cooked a lot of peas for him to eat. For them the simple things of life were more important.

“I know she is a good woman. We love one another always have. And we just work together,” said Lewis Roberson.

On their 65th wedding anniversary the bride went to the beauty shop and got her hair done, the groom got a hair cut… and hopefully he enjoyed a bowl of peas, his favorite dish.
