MISSISSIPPI (WCBI) — Lower gas prices, the last holiday weekend of the summer and the kick off to the college football season will add up to what experts predict will be the busiest Labor Day travel weekend in 6 years.

Overall, AAA predicts a 1.3 percent increase in travelers over last year this weekend, which adds up to almost 35 million people. Of those, almost 30 million will drive 50 miles or more.

The beach for a final summer weekend will be the destination for many. And with Mississippi State University at home, and Ole Miss and Alabama in Atlanta, more folks will be headed east for a long weekend.

Gas prices are down from last year but Triple A says most people have gotten so accustomed to prices over $3 per gallon that they aren’t deterred by price.
