ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI) — An officer is killed in the line of duty, and people in Monroe County and Aberdeen again pay tribute to his dedication and bravery.

Its been 24 since officer Eric Wilson was slain. The memories of what happened that day are still fresh on the minds of those who knew him.

A quiet procession from Aberdeen City Hall to Baptist Grove Cemetery in Prairie, a very fitting tribute to an uniformed cop, gone but not forgotten.

“When I came into law enforcement I noticed that the was a picture on the wall. I didn’t know the officer and I asked a couple of other senior officers about the picture and they said well that’s Eric Wilson, they call him EK,” said Aberdeen Police Chief Henry Randle.

“EK was special he was fun he was tender-hearted, which he probably if he was here today wouldn’t want me saying that to anybody. But he was thoughtful and we loved him,” said Wilson’s sister Jo Anner Wilson-Bradley.

When shots rang out that eventful day, Wilson had been conducting drug surveillance in a community near his aunt’s home. Fellow officers later learned the shots were directed at one of their own.

“It floored me, it felt like my heart got ripped out right there. And you know they say time heals all wounds but it don’t make the pain go away,” said Aberdeen Officer Aaron Fontenot.

“In that same stretch that I use to walk when I was 3 years old. That people don’t have that sense of community and safety,” said Jo Anner Wilson-Bradley.

“Because death is out there when you put on a uniform, not just a uniform, uniformed officers, but officers that are off duty on duty. You, are just have to be careful at any given point,” said Randle.

And so they come another year to that sacred resting place, knowing that if they forget, it would be an injustice to Wilson and any other fallen officer.

“Because, justice still has to be done, and we can’t give up the fight in trying to find that,” said Fontenot.

No suspect has ever been held responsible for the slaying of officer Wilson. If anyone has information about his death, contact the Aberdeen Police Department at 662-369-6454.
