WEST ALABAMA (WCBI) — County leaders across Alabama are working on ways to protect two basic rights: voting and gun ownership.

During the state’s June 3 elections, some voters showed up at precincts in at least two counties packing guns.

Election officials sought an attorney general’s opinion on whether that could be stopped.

In a ruling this week, the attorney general says county commissions can’t stop people from bringing guns to polling places. But state and federal laws can be used to block them at courthouses and other public buildings used as voting places.

Churches and private buildings where people vote can also ban guns if they want to.
