ALICEVILLE, Ala. (WCBI)-Alabama Senator Richard Shelby made his first stop on his state-wide tour at a Pickens County prison.

Senator Shelby toured the $200 million Federal Women’s prison in Aliceville to meet employees and see how the facility has grown.

The Senator worked close with Aliceville Mayor, William Mckinzey Jr., along with other local leaders to bring the prison to the area.

Shelby says he has high hopes for the first rate class facility.

“I like what I saw and that’s very unpleasant subject to deal with but we have to deal with it. I hope that they are rehabilitated. I hope they are better off when they leave here and can have skills to get jobs,” says Senator Richard Shelby.

The facility currently houses close to 1,500 inmates and is expected to reach full capacity in the near future.
