TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -Members of American Legion Post 49 have moved from the recovery phase to the rebuilding phase.

This morning, groundbreaking ceremonies were held for the post, which was destroyed by last year’s tornado. The demolition phase is now complete, and soon a foundation will be laid for the new post headquarters.

Commander Mike Pettigrew says the new facility will mean a lot to veterans.

“This site is a refuge, a sanctuary and a home for veterans, by veterans from which we serve the community. It provides us with a place where we can plan, we can socialize and we can get together and share stories that only veterans can share.”

The building will cost around $800,000.00.

Organizers hope to open the new post by this Veteran’s Day.
