AMORY, Miss. (WCBI) — An Amory golf club has been forced to confront a dire financial situation.

Established in 1992, the River Birch Golf Club in Amory is now up for sale.

Club Board President Paul Knox told the Monroe Journal keeping the club up and running has been a financial headache for the better part of a decade. Knox said the dominoes leading to the sale began their fall in the late 1990s when the club, which was originally located outside city limits, was incorporated into Amory.

After the redistricting, Knox said the club’s tax bill went through the roof about double what the club normally paid. He said the club has dumped more than $300,000 in taxes in the last ten years alone.

Local interest in the club has been waning for some time, according to Knox, who said in order to achieve optimum financial success, the membership pool needs to land in the 175-220 range. Currently, about 110 people own a club membership.

Officials expect the club will be sold some time in January.
