MONROE COUNTY,  MS (WCBI) –  The warm days of summer can be brutal, especially in north Mississippi. But a chilly treat provides relief during the hottest time of the year.  WCBI’s Allie Martin caught up with an Amory woman who is helping others beat the heat, while running a cool business.

Each afternoon, Barley Lindsey goes to work.

The Amory wife and mother owns “The Sweet Ride” Ice Cream Truck. She got the idea during a family vacation at the beach.

“Of course, there are ice cream trucks on the beach in Destin. I told my husband I thought this was an awesome job.  I would love to own an ice cream truck, well he thought I was playing,” Lindsey said.

Three days after returning home,  Barley sent her husband back to Florida to pick up a 1969 Ford she found online.

“It’s amazing what you can find on Craigslist,” she said.

Then the real work started.

“I pretty much gutted her out completely, redid the inside with flooring, freezers, painting from head  to toe and because she is such an old truck almost everything under the hood is pretty much new,” Lindsey explained.

Now, “The Sweet Ride” travels to at least two towns everyday and serves more than 40 cool treats.

Most customers are regulars, who know when “The Sweet Ride” will be on their street.

“It’s really neat, and Barley comes this far out, and we get to have the treat, I just finished supper and now I’m having a delicious ice cream dessert,” said Kerry Saylors, who was getting ice cream treats for himself and his grandkids when we rode along on “The Sweet Ride.”

Barley says “The Sweet Ride” is a fun, unique way to stay in touch with friends and make new ones.

“I am a people person, I can pretty much talk to anyone and this business allows me to be able to communicate with my neighbors, my townsmen and the community, and it’s also something I get to do with my children, and that’s one of the most important things, we are just making fond memories,” Lindsey said.

“The Sweet Ride” is also serves parties, church functions, and festivals.  For more information, call 662 825-1818. Or go to, www.facebook.com/barley.lindsey
