Video: Another State Veterans Cemetery

KILMICHAEL, Miss.(WCBI)–Ground is broken and dirt is turned in Kilmichael where construction is officially underway for the North Mississippi Veterans Memorial Cemetery.

The area just off Highway 82 in Kilmichael is the latest cemetery where all Americans can come from both far and near, to say thanks for your service to our nation. Thursday’s groundbreaking drew an emotional applauds for the $6.6 million dollar project that includes construction and outfitting of the cemetery.

“When we talk about our veterans and their family members, and our mission to honor them with dignity and respect; this second cemetery here in Kilmichael will be fantastic for them,” said George Eisenbach/Dept. of Veterans Affairs.

The other state veteran cemetery is in Newton. Veterans who have honorably served in uniform, like American Legion Post 52 Commander Kenny Self, are expected to be among the men and women buried on those hallowed grounds.

“As far as my comrades in arms, they should be honored. They have sacrificed. Most of them have sacrificed more than just time. They have given their lives for their country,” said Commander Kenny Self/American Legion Post 52.

“This will be as all of our state, national; and tribal cemeteries. This will be a national shrine,” said George Eisenbach.

Desert Storm Army Veteran Calvin Johnson agrees with Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant when he considers veterans to be interned there….state treasures.

“I think having this final resting place as a monument to those guys is a great thing,” said Calvin Johnson/Desert Storm Army Veteran.

“The head stones, the markers will be aligned. Everything will be in pristine condition. Landscaping and so forth, so this is a great burial benefit for veterans and their eligible family members,” said George Eisenbach.

“I think its an honor to serve the country and it’s a privilege to wear the uniform of the United States Armed Forces,” said Commander Kenny Self.

Construction has officially begun and will be finished and open for the first interments in the Spring of 2017.
