NEW ALBANY, Miss. (WCBI) — Law enforcement agencies throughout the state are stepping up patrols this holiday season. The Mississippi Office of Highway Safety hosted a conference in New Albany where experts spoke about the spike in drunk driving crashes during this time of year.

Law enforcement officials are in their period of enhanced patrols as part of an effort to get drunk drivers off the road before they injure themselves or other drivers. Authorities say if you want to avoid any problems this Christmas season, don’t drink and get behind the wheel.

“You have a lot of Christmas parties, get-togethers, a lot of people celebrate with alcohol, and we lose a lot of lives on the roadway this time of year and we’re just trying to get out there and keep people from driving while they’re impaired, whether it be alcohol or other substances,” said Sherman Chief Joel Spellins.

The “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign runs through January first statewide.
