Video: Bridge May Be Named for Late Senator Brown, Road for Narcotics Agent

terry-brown-rememberedLOWNDES COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI) — A name of a popular North Mississippi legislator may live on.

Lowndes County supervisors today recommended the state Legislature honor state Senator Terry Brown by naming the Highway 82 bridge over the Tennessee-Tombigbee Waterway the Terry W. Brown Memorial Bridge in his honor.

 Brown died in September after a year-long battle with cancer. The Lowndes County native served the last 10 years in the senate, rising to its second highest position.

The Legislature is expected to approve the recommendation when it convenes early next year.

Meanwhile, the Mississippi Bureau of Narcotics wants the Legislature to name a section of Highway 9 just south of Pittsboro in honor of former agent Spencer Beckley Sr.

Calhoun County supervisors recommended it to the Legislature today.

The Bruce resident was was an undercover drug agent who died two days before Christmas in 1989 when he had a traffic accident just outside Calhoun City while on his way home from work in Jackson.

He was 27 at the time.
