BROOKSVILLE, Miss. (WCBI) -Some Brooksville students can call themselves some of the top readers in Mississippi.

Lieutenant Governor Tate Reeves was in town Monday to congratulate teachers and students at Virgil Jones Junior Elementary, on a 20% jump in their third grade reading scores. The elementary school is just one of a few in the state to have both reading and data coaches assisting teachers in interpretation of testing and attendance information.

The coaches say their efforts are paying off.

“It means a great deal to this school being in a small rural community. having 95% of our students pass was a great success, and it shows how hard the teachers work, and how hard the students work.”

The state average in third grade reading scores was only about a 7%  increase.
