BRUCE, Miss. (WCBI) — Fed up with how stray animals were being handled, some Bruce residents have decided to take matters into their own hands.

The Dog Lovers League formed to give stray and abandoned dogs a fighting chance. The “no kill” animal shelter was founded by Rose Wells, and is growing rapidly.

City policy in Bruce has been to keep strays for five days, and then turn them over to the Oxford Animal Shelter.

The League petitioned the Board of Aldermen to take the animals after the five-day waiting period.

A permanent shelter site is the next hurdle.

“Well, I have two people that have actually taken in the dogs until we have a shelter built in Bruce,” Wells said. “This is Kathy and Benny Stewart, and they have opened their property to take care of the dogs and feed them, and keep them watered.”

Wells says the most positive sign has been that the first seven dogs they rescued all found homes.

The League has several fundraisers planned, and they have established an account at Renasant Bank in Bruce.
