PONTOTOC, Miss.(WCBI)–The Highway 278 weekend death of an Amish man and his horse, and the injuries to his wife and child raises some questions. Just what are the rules of the road when it comes to the not so modern vehicles driven by the Amish.

The Amish moving around in Pontotoc County from point A to point B in their not so modern method of travel can be seen often on the highway doing their business.

“The Amish there are a lot of Amish in this community. They have the right of way just like anybody else, actually more,” said Chris Hodges/MHP Troop F.

“This Highway is awful busy and they fly through here. And these boys give them tickets, but the speed limit is 65 see,” said J C Higgins/Pontotoc County.

As busy as the stretch of Highway 278 is, motorist going about their daily activities must pay attention to every vehicle they encounter.

“I just urge people to be mindful of them you know. People watch for motorcycles, they watch for bicyclists, the Amish are out here too in their horse and wagon. Need to watch for them,” said Chris Hodges.

“With his brothers up there at the cattle and hog sale. And he was going to the equipment sale out here, at L & L at Thaxton. So thats the reason he was on the highway,” said J C Higgins.

So when driving in Pontotoc or any other county in the state, keep an eye out for people traveling in buggies being pulled literally by horse power.

“They have the right of way, they were doing what they needed to do,” said Chris Hodges.

M-H-P did not say whether or not any charges will be filed against the driver of the pickup truck.
