TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI)  -Cadets from Tupelo’s Junior Police Academy put in a little community service time today.

The annual Junior Police Academy began last week, and today, the 19 cadets picked up debris and trash left over from last April’s tornado at Elvis Presley Lake.

Instructors say it’s important for the young people to understand the importance of service.

“We think it’s important to teach cadets ways of giving back to the community , this area was devastated by a tornado last year and it’s just a mess out here and they need all the help they can cleaning up.”

The Junior Police Academy runs through Friday. Later this week, WCBI’s Allie Martin will have more from the academy.
