CALHOUN CITY, Miss.(WCBI)–In July 2014 local economic developers having a vision for Bruce, Calhoun City, and Vardaman brought in a team from MDA, to get another perspective and another assessment for success.

A series of meetings like the one held in Calhoun City appears to be what leaders needed to help identify positive assets. Hopefully facts gathered will help in bringing more revenue into the county.

“The more economic growth we can have here in Calhoun City, it builds our town, it builds our county, it builds the outlying areas. It keeps people here,” said Laura Edwards/Calhoun City Chamber of Commerce President.

With the information gathered by MDA the leaders of Bruce, Calhoun City, and Vardaman are able to get together now and map out a strategy for economic success.

“We have three good communities. I think people in each community want to have something happen. So if we can start partnering and sharing the resources to make the whole county be more effective for the common good of everybody, I think thats going to be so important,” said Judy Sinwell/Calhoun City.

From the assessment mapping, Calhoun City’s strong points include auto sales, apparel, and general merchandising.

“I think there are still areas that maybe we could grow, we could build on,” said Laura Edwards.

No gigantic surprise that Bruce is big on lumber and building materials. Numbers are showing that Calhoun County is more than just sweet potatoes.

“Weyerhauser has always been a staple industry in our area we also has United Chair over there which has good paying jobs also. We’ve also been looking at you know capitalizing off of toyota and we are still looking at that,” said Marshall Coleman/Calhoun City Alderman.

“There is a lot of energy in the county, individuals who want to have a venue or place to start having the conversations and then help things, help the leadership people move forward,” said Judy Sinwell.

Utilizing the facts from MDA, the three Calhoun County towns must now come together and have a joint meeting of the minds, as they walk down the slow charted course to economic success.
