STARKVILLE and JACKSON, Miss. (WCBI) -Governor Phil Bryant could sign a bill that would bring higher tax bills to some Oktibbeha County property owners.

The legislation consolidates the tax base and bond debts of the Oktibbeha County and Starkville districts. It’ll mean a new tax rate of about 63 mills. That’s a small cut in the city and an increase in the county. But when the new district wants to build or renovate facilities supporters say everyone will share the costs equally.

“Starkville bonds are going to be rolling off 4 mills in the next year and a half and we’re not seeking to increase any taxes but we might want to maintain those taxes to support schools and school buildings in building this sixth and seventh grade school with Mississippi State.”

The consolidated district should know its tax rates and values in June or July.
