TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) -The tragic and deadly shooting at the South Carolina church is a reminder that houses of worship are not immune to violence. Many area churches have stepped up security measures in recent years, as mass shootings and even church shootings have occurred.

At Tupelo’s West Jackson Street Baptist Church, security cameras are installed throughout the pre-school area to better monitor traffic and to help keep the children safe.

Youth Pastor Chris O’Daniel says there are also measures taken to help protect the congregation during worship services.

“It is difficult to make , 100 percent, crime proof, I guess, as any public setting, whether a theatre or a shopping center or a mall. But we do have policemen who are members of our church, they are out there , they are involved in our service and kind of keep an eye on things.”

O’Daniel encourages everyone to pray for the victims of the church shooting in South Carolina.
