VERNON, Ala.(WCBI) — Characters from the the Middle Ages have come alive, and were at Lamar County High School (LCHS) in Vernon. Geoffrey Chaucer, who has been dubbed the Father of English Literature, continues to inspire generations of young and old over six centuries later.

Pirates on the lawn of LCHS dressed in garbs from a time period from long ago. A skinny-leg foreman, who is a thief. Characters straight from the pages of Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales have come alive.

“I’m the squire. I’m the youngest on the trip. I’m the son of the knight,” LCHS student Scout Turner, who was typecast as a squire, said. “I’m very talented, and a lot of the things I do, I can joust, play flute, write poetry.”

“And I’m the summoner,” LCHS student Nick Reeves, who played the role of a summoner, said. “I have scabby brows and a skin condition that are carbuncles. I summon the people to ecclesiastical court. And I have terrible breathe because of onions and garlic.”

After months of researching characters from english literature, the talented students take on the role of people they think are not so different from modern day players on a stage in the game of life, even though 600 years have passed and gone.

“I know everything there is to know about love,” LCHS student Lexi Thompson, who played the role of the Wife of Bath, said. “I’ve been married five times, and looking for lucky number six.”

“I’m the parson,” LCHS student Christian Clay said. “I’m the best person on the trip. I’m the richest morally, and I practice what I preach.”

If educators at LCHS have their way, those characters should remain fresh in the minds of students at least for years, if not centuries, to come.

“I’m the priorist, my name is Madam Eglantine,” LCHS student Abby Oliver said. “I like dogs.”

This is the 14th year that students at LCHS have dressed up in honor of Chaucer’s contributions.
