Northeast Mississippi (WCBI) – As Northeast Mississippians prepare to celebrate and observe Easter weekend, many are buying new outfits for church Sunday morning, stocking up on food for family get togethers and also purchasing wildlife. WCBI’s Allie Martin stopped by a local feed and farm supply store and has more on a holiday tradition.

On this Good Friday, there was a steady stream of customers at Moore’s Feed Mill and Store in Pontotoc. Many were there for seasonal selections.

“I’m buying some baby chicks and a duck for grandbaby, nephews and nieces.”

Every year around Easter, Moore’s stocks up on rabbits, ducks and colorful chickens.

“We’ve had several people call and ask for chickens, ducks and rabbits and all kinds of stuff like that, done very well with it so far.”

Dobbs and other store staffers help customers pick out the cute critters, then they also help them get the right food, and other supplies to keep the new pets alive and healthy long after Easter.

“Most of the time you buy like scratch grain, crushed corn, all kinds of stuff mixed in it, that’s generally what you feed them, keep them watered good and they got to stay warm.”

That’s where heat lamps come in handy, and cages are also a good idea, especially if there are other pets in the household.

Of course, kids love the bunnies, chicks and ducks.

What are you going to do with them?

“Put them in a cage at my meme’s. I used to have some baby chickens at my house, I have an Easter bunny and I like it and it’s so cute.”

“They’re cool, I like the black and the other colored ones.”

Are you going to get any?

“I will if my mom will let me”

Rylie has until Saturday to convince his mom, Moore’s expects to be sold out by then.

With proper care, chickens, ducks and rabbits can live for years. Of course, the food coloring eventually wears off on the chickens.
