TUPELO, MISS. (WCBI) –  Tupelo’s top firefighter gets a big honor from a civic group.

Chief Thomas Walker was named “Fireman of the Year” by the Exchange Club of Tupelo.   The chief was nominated because of his dedication and willingness to lead by example.

The chief says the award is a huge honor, but he says credit must also go to all members of the Tupelo Fire Department.

“For my name to be on this it remiss, because there should be 92 other names on here.  Those guys go out, they do the work , they’re day in and day out, I’m just honored to be called their chief that I can help them to get equipment they need to do their job, to provide them with a stable work environment where they can come in and help the citizens of Tupelo and not have to worry about wants and needs at the fire department,” said Chief Walker.

Chief Walker was surprised with the honor.  He was told the lunch at “South ” Restaurant was for a sales meeting,  not a civic club luncheon.
