ABERDEEN, Miss. (WCBI- Glenn Draper just finished a conversation with his friend outside Southview Apartments when gunshots shattered the calm of the morning.

“Initially I didn’t think nothing of it. And once I saw a mother carrying a child with blood all over the shirt,  I said oh my God! Someone actually got shot! Then a couple of moments later I saw a guy come around with a black gun,” said Draper.

Aberdeen Police Chief Henry Randle tells WCBI Anthony Strong, 34, allegedly fired around 6 shots into a crowd around 11:30 Monday morning. Strong’s alleged target fled the scene unharmed, but a 3-year-old boy was hit by a stray bullet.

“Once the gentleman realized who the subject he was shooting at was indeed the person he was looking for, he started shooting at him and the subject ran. Upon him running, the gentleman kept running behind him still looking at him and in the incident he struck a child,” said Chief Randle.

The little boy was shot once in the shoulder and airlifted to a hospital in Jackson.

“The child is listed in good condition. I’ve spoken with some of the people there in Jackson. The bullet did go through not hitting any bones or organs,” said Chief Randle.

Officials believe the shooting was in retaliation to an incident last Friday when a 17 year old was shot. Chief Henry Randle urges the public to leave the law in the hands of the police.

“Just because you got a lot of rumors that’s going around saying this and that, you will be charged and it makes no sense for you to go out there and start shooting someone because of what you think,” said Chief Randle.

Strong fled to Memphis and was arrested around 6:30 Monday night. He will be charged with attempted murder and having a fire arm by a convicted felon.
