ACKERMAN, Miss.(WCBI)–In Ackerman and Choctaw County there is the death of a legendary educator.

All flags in the Choctaw County School District are flying at half staff. Relatives, friends, faculty, and students are remembering the life and accomplishments of a beloved and longtime Superintendent Dr. Ty Cobb.

“I never heard him get riled up there on campus or anything when him and an administrator or somebody disagreed. He just, you could tell he was just in deep thought, he thought before he spoke. And was an outstanding leader in that regard,” said Superintendent Glen Beard, Jr/Choctaw County Schools.

“Just, I mean the most pleasant man to be around. Loved the teachers wonderful to work for. I worked for him for five years before he retired.”

Dr. Cobb’s retirement in 2000 ended some twenty years of dedicated service to children, teachers, and parents of the district.

“I think one of his greatest accomplishments it was the building of the, whats now called the Ty Cobb Complex which is our athletic Gymnasium and Auditorium here on our campus at Choctaw County High School,” said Glen Beard.

School district employee Levolie Davis has seen seven superintendents come and go over the years.

“He was good, what he did you know. And he wasn’t one to hollar at you, he was just a firm man, you do your work,” said Levolie Davis/Choctaw County School District Employee.

“I taught all three of his children. I had his son my first year. One of his daughters cheered for me. So they were just, you know precious to have in class,” said Mistie Thomas.

And so the man with the identifiable mustache and signature hat he wore, will for some time be remembered for making a difference in the lives of those he touched.

Funeral services were held at Coleman Funeral Home, Burial followed in New Haven Cemetary in the Simpson Community of Choctaw County.
