TUPELO, Miss. (WCBI) — While they say there is no such thing as a free lunch, some north Mississippi did discover there is such a thing as free gas.

Some drove to Tupelo from as far away as Booneville and got in line at Papa V’s on east Main. The line of vehicles grew quite long.

Finally at 9 a.m., members of Saving Station International Ministries of Tupelo began pumping $10 worth of free gas to each customer.

Organizer Casey Bumpus says the church wanted to give something back to the community.

“We’ve been here for 2 and half years and we’ve had so much growth to happen, so many great things so today what we’ve decided to do was come and just do something to give back to the community,” she said. “You know with the economy being so bad and stuff we just want to do something from the kindness of our heart to give back to the community.”

By the time Saving Station Ministries wrapped things up a little bit after 2 p.m., they had given away $10,000 worth of gas to 1,000 customers.

And the customers appreciated this tremendous act of Christian love.

“I think they’re doing a good thing for the community and I appreciate the doing it for us,” said Alan Hunter of Okolona.

“It’s pretty cool, ” said Melissa Buse of Tupelo. “It’s a good experience. It’s a blessing. And you can feel the spirits when you come up here.”

And Collette Collins of Tupelo summed it up quite simply, “We’re getting blessed and highly favored,” she exclaimed.

And after wrapping up their giveaway, members of the Saving Station’s congregation got together for a time of fellowship, and a group photo in front of the Community Development Foundation building.
