Tupelo, MS (WCBI) — Hundreds turned out in Tupelo Wednesday night to honor a police officer killed in the line of duty. A candlelight vigil was held for Sergeant Gale Stauffer, who lost his life in a shootout with bank robbery suspects Monday. Prayers were also offered for Sergeant Stauffer’s family. People also prayed for the recovery of Officer Joseph Maher, who was also shot, and is in critical condition. Police Chief Bart Aguirre thanked the community for its support and prayers. Mayor Jason Shelton says the strong showing from the community is vital:

“Tonight is an opportunity for the city, on Christmas Day, to come together as a show of unity, togetherness and just a time of prayer for our fallen hero, the officer who is still in critical care at the hospital and law enforcement in general.”

The ceremony concluded with “Amazing Grace”.
