CLAY COUNTY, Miss.(WCBI)–Rising waters in the Point Harbour and Humphries Cove Community is impacted 20 homes just off Highway 50 near the Tenn Tom Waterway Bridge in Clay County.

Residents of Point Harbor and Humphries Cove spent the day gathering valuables and equipment, heading for higher ground.

“Well I know you live next to the water that the risk you take . You know the assumption,” said one Point Harbor Resident.

There is a concern, however, Clay County EMA Director Kerrie Gentry-Blissard is monitoring the situation and has been in close contact with the army corps of engineers.

“It came up within 18 inches of my house Saturday night and now they are saying that it’s going to possibly be worse tonight. So I’m just hauling all my stuff out,” said resident.

“They are predicting that it will crest at 176 point 9, so we are not looking at the severity that we saw Saturday. We saw come through our area,” said Kerri Gentry-Blissard/Clay County EMA.

Lives aren’t in danger from the water and the belief the barges sinking in Columbus are causing the floods is not true.

“The barge is restricting partial flow but is not causing the flooding issues in the Point Harbor and the Humphries Cove area in Clay County,” said Kerri Gentry-Blissard.

“I mean it is what it is. When you abide by the river you have to assume the risk.”

Forecasters say the waterway should crest sometime Tuesday.
