Video: Clay County Megasite Unveiled
CLAY COUNTY, Miss. (WCBI)-More than 100 people in West Point gathered in the Civic Center tuesday night as economic developers and leaders unveiled a new meagsite to the public.
The “Prairie Belt Powersite” is expected to bring industrial activity to the area.
Ron Maloney is Vice President of Economic Development for West Point and Clay County. He’s thrilled to finally unveil Prairie Belt Powersite to the community.
“That’s the name of the site that people in this community have heard about for years, about a site that was being developed…A large industrial site to recruit business,” says Maloney.
Supporters say the new powersite will provide a strong economic boost that will benefit Clay and neighboring counties.
“This county has the highest unemployment rate in the entire state of Mississippi. It has never really recovered from that so what we’re doing is creating a site where we could attract a very large user which will have..we’re not talking a couple 100 jobs. We’re talking 800 to 1,000 people,” says Maloney.
The new megasite will not only provide water, electric, and wastewater infrastructure, but will also allow easy highway and railway access, which could attract several businesses from around the world.
“A company comes here and manufactures..if they are supplying themselves out of Mexico with component parts and materials and it gets on a rail car , it never leaves until it gets to the site..reducing the cost and the time to transport,” says Maloney.
With all the benefits this powersite can offer, Maloney believes the Prairie Belt Powersite is just what the community needs to improve the quality of life in northeast mississippi.
“You’d be lowering the unemployment rate and raising the standard of living. Right now the annual wage or salary in clay county is nowhere near $81,000. That’s the kind of quality of jobs we’re looking to attract here.”
The powersite is located south of hazelwood road. Prairie belt powersite is the first master planned, industrial megastie in clay county.
