WEST POINT, Miss. (WCBI) — Bidding for an old .45 Caliber Thompson Submachine gun has ended and now the Clay County Sheriff Department has a little more resources to purchase much needed equipment.

The gun made in 1936, a vintage piece of history and also referred to by such names as the Chicago typewriter and others, winds up in the hands of a Louisiana gun enthusiast. Gun owner William McDonald of Newellton, Louisiana was one of six bidders for the antique weapon.

“The winning bid was $25,600 which exceeded our goal of $18,000. So, that will give us a little extra money to play with as far as getting equipment for our department which is much needed. And at the same time saving taxpayers money,” Clay County Sheriff Eddie Scott said.

Scott says the Tommy Gun, also called a Chicago Typewriter, or Trench Sweeper, is not the weapon of choice for this Golden Triangle department.
