COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)–A utility pole goes down after a police chase and a Columbus Light & Water crew is dispatched to the scene. Once law enforcement wraps up their work, city crews do what they do best….restore power to customers.

The moment Columbus Light & Water utility workers received a 9-1-1 call Thursday night, they were immediately dispatched to the corner of MLK and 21st Avenue on Columbus’ Northside.

“We have 4 men on call 24 hours a day seven days a week, 365 days a year. That’s separate from the other employees,” said Marcus Rushing/CL&W Electric Supervisor.

After checking in with the 8-1-1 hotline to locate other utilities, and getting the go ahead from police investigators, utility crewmen roll up their sleeves and go to work.

“If we can fix it, its a quick fix we’ll fix it then. If not, we’ll get a crew in the next morning,” said Marcus Rushing.

“I tell you a person had to be around the corner from death to not hear all those booms though,” said Joe Lewis Brooks.

In about an hour there was light, a half dozen homes without power were back in business.

“There was a separate line that pulled off that pole and fed some houses and we had to kill that to work it safely. So when they do that they work fast,” said Marcus Rushing.

“They didn’t take long. Much quicker than I thought it was going to be,” said Joe Lewis Brooks.

We are told by Columbus Light & Water, the driver that knocked down the pole is responsible for the cost of labor and materials to replace it.
