COLUMBUS, Miss.(WCBI)–A group of parents having children that are students of the Columbus Municipal School District are enrolled in a special academy. These parents gathered at Simms Scott Community Center themselves are learning what to do in order to help their children make the grade.

The 2015-2016 Parent Academy is a collaboration between CMSD and community-based partners to acknowledge, honor, support and promote family involvement in student achievement.

Parents and a facilitator discuss issues surrounding modern technology, homework support, approaches to math, and more.

In an effort to help their child, attendees also go over reading lists, armed with the knowledge that their child is no longer learning to read…..they are now reading to learn.

“Its important because they are doing more than we did when we was going to school. So, it helps to get involved and you learn as well as teaching your kids,” said Youshika Jackson/Columbus Parent.

Parents, Daycare, Guardians, and other community members also attended the parent academy at Brandon Central Services Center.
