COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A group of college students from Wisconsin spent part of their spring break sprucing up a Columbus cemetery.

Forty-five students from the University of Wisconsin-River Falls  raked and bagged leaves Tuesday morning at Friendship Cemetery in preparation for the up-coming Spring Pilgrimage.

The stop in Columbus was part of a  “Pay it Forward” tour. They are stopping at five cities, doing community service.

They chose Columbus after finding the Friendly City on Google.

Lindsay Pluger says, “I’d never heard of Columbus, Mississippi until I started this project. And just to know that it was one of the first places that started decorating graves for Memorial Day for soldiers was just an incredible thing to find out.”

The students’ work was coordinated through United Way. They will finish up their tour in Houston, Texas with a celebration with students from other universities.
