COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Dr. Martin Luther King Junior Day is just four days away. It’s a time we reflect on what the civil rights activist did for the country and some local kids are sharing what they learn from Dr. King.

Dr. Martin Luther King Junior is famously known for his 1963 “I have a dream” speech. Throughout his years, he publicly voiced his support for equal rights for African Americans. Adriane Stovall’s 4th and 5th graders at the Columbus Boys and Girls Club have been learning about Dr. King’s legacy over the past two weeks.

“He grew up as a young boy and he had a dream the world should have all equal rights and that black people should be able to do the same as whites.”

5th grade student Laila Sparks recognizes the importance of Dr. King’s influence all these years later:

“He stood up for us and he went to jail so many times just to help change the world,” said Sparks.

The Boys and Girls Club released 86 balloons in honor of how old Dr. King would be today. The students say he was a strong leader who helped move the country forward.

“He was a good leader and he had a dream and he was a good man growing up,” said 4th grader, Jordan Bailey.

5th grader, Shekinnah Brown added, “He wanted to let white and black people be together.”
