COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — A Columbus businessman hopes to use a successful model around Mississippi State to jump start development around Mississippi University for Women.

Jabari Edwards has purchased an old grocery store at the corner of College and 15th Streets. He hopes to develop a complex with retail shops on the first floor and apartments on the second floor.

MSU has had success with developments around its campus and Edwards says he thinks it’ll work here catering to the MUW campus. He hopes other developers will invest in the area. Work could begin by next summer.

The Columbus City Council approved rezoning the property from light industrial to neighborhood commercial.
