COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — The Columbus Community Outreach Center is stepping to the plate to help area homeless.

City police and firemen are on the lookout for homeless individuals in need in hopes of giving them a little assistance.

The effort goes beyond that, and equally relies on residents to refer the homeless to the Community Outreach Center.

Glenda Buckhalter with the city organization said the effort has shown positive results thus far.

“I’ve had several gentlemen this week that have stopped by,” Buckhaulter said. “They needed a place to live. One gentleman has been sleeping in his car for a while. Another one was let go from the jail, and he’s not from Columbus and he has to be here until Dec. 9. So, we put them up, we gave them food, we gave them clothing, hygiene bags and we gave them nights at the hotel.”

Residents who notice an individual who appears to be homeless are encouraged to refer them to the center for possible assistance.
