COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) — One Columbus church is using coffee to keep local kids out of trouble.

A Prepared Table Ministry – located on College Street – opened its own coffee shop cafe, Cafe 23-Five, Saturday in hopes to provide a family-like setting.

The Cafe served one dollar lattes, and fresh brewed coffee. Cakes and other sweets were also for sale.

The pastor of the church says the idea started after seeing a rise in teenage crime throughout the city.

“We’ve noticed that there have been some altercations that have been fatal. What we want to do is provide an opportunity or a place where they can come and be safe without all the extra stuff,” says Pastor Timothy Bailey.

All proceeds will go toward funding trips for the youth.

The Cafe plans to host other youth events in the  near future.
