COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – Columbus is sweetening the pot to try to attract developers to what city leaders hope will become a prime piece of real estate. The old Lee Middle School on Military Road has been vacant for four years but the city and city schools have been unable to get a major purchaser. The city council tonight added the 17-acre site to the city’s central business district. The city’s redevelopment authority board thinks the tax and related incentives that come along with the designation might help entice developers. The property is a quarter mile from a Highway 82 exit, can be seen from the busy road and is in a commercial area that might make it good for hotels or retail projects.
