COLUMBUS, Miss. (WCBI) – A postal service supervisor is the newest member of the Columbus school board.

In a 4 – 2 vote Frederick Sparks was appointed by the City Council Tuesday night.

Seven people applied for the position after Ward 5 Councilman Stephen Jones resigned March 10 to be on the Council.

Sparks has two children in the school system and will soon have a third.

He believes there are opportunities to improve the school system.

“I’d say more or less the drop out rate. You know, paying close attention to that. Making sure we have our children adequately educated. You know, to approach technology. We’ve got a lot of smart children that are leaving this area for better jobs elsewhere.”

Sparks will fill the remainder of Jones’ unexpired five year term that ends in 2019.
